Most homeowners hire a roofing contractor, see shingles go on the roof, pay the invoice, and call it done. What they cannot see is whether the components that go on before the shingles were installed correctly, whether the right materials were used, and whether their new roof will perform as the manufacturer intended for the next 25 years. This guide explains every layer and component in a quality residential roof installation, what each one does, what the code requires, and what questions to ask before the crew starts work.

Why What Is Under the Shingles Matters as Much as the Shingles Themselves

Asphalt shingles are the visible surface of a roofing system, not the complete system. A shingle performs as rated only when the components beneath and around it are installed correctly. A Class 4 impact-resistant shingle installed over wet decking, with no drip edge, over a single layer of felt that was not properly lapped, will not deliver 25 years of service regardless of its manufacturer rating. The components working together as a system determine the actual performance. The shingles alone do not.

This is also why the cost difference between a thorough installation and a cut-corner installation is largely invisible at the time of installation but visible within five to ten years, when a homeowner discovers that their ten-year-old roof has a leak pattern consistent with improper underlayment installation or that their gutters have caused fascia rot because drip edge was omitted.

The Roof Deck: The Foundation Everything Else Depends On

The roof deck is the structural surface to which all roofing components are attached. In virtually all East Texas residential construction, it is either 7/16-inch or 1/2-inch OSB (oriented strand board) or 1/2-inch plywood.

What to Inspect on the Deck

On a replacement roof, the first and most critical step after tearing off the old shingles is a thorough deck inspection. Every panel should be walked and assessed. The signs of deck damage that warrant panel replacement include:

● Soft spots indicating moisture absorption and delamination

● Visible rot on the panel face or edges

● Warping or buckling that prevents the deck from laying flat under the new shingles

● Panels with inadequate fastening to the rafters beneath

Decking Fasteners

The International Residential Code specifies minimum fastening requirements for roof decking based on the wind design speed for the location. East Texas falls in a wind design zone where panel edge and field fastener patterns matter. A contractor who does not know the fastener schedule for your jurisdiction is not meeting code requirements.

Replace any damaged panels before proceeding. Installing new shingles over compromised decking is the single most common root cause of premature roof failure that Redline inspectors encounter on East Texas replacement jobs.

Drip Edge: The Component Most Often Omitted by Low-Cost Contractors

Drip edge is a metal flashing component installed at the roof edges (eaves and rakes) that directs water away from the fascia board and into the gutter. The IRC Section R905.2.8.5 requires drip edge installation at both eaves and rakes on all new residential roofing installations. It is a code requirement, not an option.

Despite being required by code, drip edge is frequently omitted by contractors looking to reduce material costs or installation time. It is hidden behind the gutter and not visible from the ground, which makes omissions hard for homeowners to detect.

What Drip Edge Does

At the eaves: Water running off the shingle edge is directed into the gutter by the drip edge rather than running along the back of the gutter and wicking into the fascia board. Without drip edge, every rain event moves water against the fascia, and fascia rot follows over time.

At the rakes (the sloped edges at the gable ends): Drip edge prevents water from wicking under the shingle edge along the gable. Without rake drip edge, wind-driven rain during East Texas storm events moves water under the shingle edge and against the decking and fascia.

Ask your contractor to confirm drip edge installation at both eaves and rakes. If they propose omitting it to reduce cost, that is a sign to reconsider the contractor.

Underlayment: The Secondary Water Barrier

Underlayment is the layer installed directly over the roof deck, beneath the shingles. It serves as a secondary water barrier, protecting the deck from water infiltration if individual shingles fail or are damaged.

Felt vs. Synthetic Underlayment

15-pound (Type I) asphalt felt is the minimum code-compliant underlayment for steep-slope residential roofing in East Texas. It provides basic water resistance and has been used in residential roofing for decades. Its limitations are that it is heavier than synthetic alternatives, prone to tearing during installation, and absorbs moisture when exposed during the construction process.

Synthetic underlayment has replaced felt on most quality residential installations in East Texas over the past 15 years. Synthetic products are significantly more tear-resistant during installation, less susceptible to moisture absorption if exposed before shingle installation is complete, lighter for the installation crew to handle, and provide better slip resistance on a wet roof surface. Leading products like GAF Deck-Armor, Owens Corning WeatherLock, and synthetic products from Malarkey and Atlas carry testing certifications that document their performance under East Texas conditions.

For most East Texas residential replacements, specifying a quality synthetic underlayment over standard felt is a practical upgrade with meaningful long-term benefit.

Ice and Water Shield

Ice and water shield is a self-adhering membrane with a rubberized asphalt backing that bonds directly to the roof deck. Where felt and synthetic underlayment shed water, ice and water shield creates a watertight seal around fasteners and at laps.

In East Texas, ice and water shield is most valuable in specific locations regardless of whether a full coverage application is warranted:

● Eaves: A minimum two-course coverage at the eaves protects the most vulnerable edge of the roof from water backup during heavy rainfall

● Valleys: The entire valley length should be protected with ice and water shield to handle the concentrated water flow at these convergence points

● Around all penetrations: Chimney perimeters, skylight surrounds, and the base of vent pipes benefit from ice and water shield integration with standard flashing systems

Manufacturer warranties for Malarkey and Atlas products specify installation requirements that include these ice and water shield applications at critical locations. Meeting manufacturer installation requirements is what activates the full warranty.

Flashing: The Most Commonly Failed Component on East Texas Roofs

Flashing is metal (typically galvanized steel or aluminum) used at all transition points on the roof where two surfaces meet or where a penetration passes through the roofing system. Flashing failure is the leading cause of residential roof leaks across East Texas, because it is a skilled component to install correctly and because it is under chronic stress from thermal expansion and contraction in East Texas’s wide temperature range.

Types of Flashing on a Residential Roof

Step flashing is used at wall-to-roof transitions, such as where a dormer, addition, or chimney side wall meets the roof surface. Each piece of step flashing overlaps the one below it in a shingle pattern, integrating with the shingle courses. Step flashing done correctly is nearly leak-proof. Step flashing done with a single continuous piece of metal bent at the wall (called counter flashing or pan flashing) is one of the most common installation shortcuts that Redline inspectors document.

Valley flashing protects the V-channel where two roof planes meet, where water volume and velocity are highest. Valley flashing can be open metal (an exposed metal V channel) or closed valley (shingles woven across the valley). Both work when installed correctly; both fail if installation details are skipped.

Chimney flashing consists of base flashing (integrated with the shingle courses at the chimney base), step flashing (up the chimney sides), and counter flashing (embedded in the chimney mortar joints and lapping over the step flashing). All three components must be present and properly integrated for chimney flashing to perform.

Pipe boot flashing surrounds each plumbing stack penetration. Rubber or neoprene pipe boots with metal flanges are the standard product. The boot collar must seal against the pipe, and the metal flange must integrate properly with the surrounding shingle courses.

Ask your contractor to walk you through how they handle each flashing type before the job starts. The answer reveals installation quality at least as clearly as price.

Ridge Cap Shingles and Ridge Vents

The ridge is the peak of the roof where two slopes meet. It is also where a continuous ridge vent is installed if the home has a ridge vent ventilation system, which is the preferred exhaust ventilation method for most East Texas residential builds.

Ridge Cap Shingles

Ridge cap shingles are specifically manufactured products designed for the ridge application. They are thicker than field shingles, pre-scored for bending over the ridge, and nailed at a location that is covered by the next ridge cap shingle in sequence. Using cut field shingles as ridge cap, which some contractors do to reduce material cost, produces a ridge cap that is thinner, more prone to lifting, and lacks the aesthetic consistency of manufactured ridge cap.

Ridge Vents

A continuous ridge vent runs the full length of the ridge, allowing hot attic air to exhaust continuously along the peak. Ridge vents require a cut in the decking along the ridge, installation of the vent body, and then coverage with ridge cap shingles. The vent opening size and the ridge cap coverage depth must be coordinated to allow airflow while preventing wind-driven rain infiltration.

Ridge vents work optimally with soffit intake ventilation. A contractor who installs a ridge vent without confirming that soffit intake is adequate is installing half a ventilation system.

What to Ask Before Your Residential Roof Installation Begins

Before a crew starts on your roof, ask your contractor to confirm:

1. Will you inspect and document the deck condition after tear-off? Any contractor who will not show you deck photos before installing over the deck is hiding something.

2. Are you installing drip edge at both eaves and rakes? This is a code requirement. The answer should be yes without hesitation.

3. What underlayment product are you using and what is its ASTM certification? Know what is going on your roof.

4. Where are you installing ice and water shield? At minimum: eaves, valleys, and around all penetrations.

5. How are you handling step flashing at the wall transitions? The answer should describe individual overlapping pieces integrated with the shingle courses.

6. What ridge cap product are you using? It should be manufacturer-matched ridge cap, not cut field shingles.

7. Do I get a written warranty that covers both the material and the installation workmanship? Both should be documented separately.
