For new construction, this is the point at which the ventilation system is designed into the structure rather than retrofitted later. On a replacement roof, the ventilation system is often constrained by what exists. On new construction, there is no constraint.

The correct approach for new construction in East Texas is a balanced ventilation system: continuous soffit intake at the eaves and continuous ridge exhaust at the peak, sized to meet the 1:150 net free ventilation ratio (or 1:300 with balanced intake/exhaust).
